Classroom Experiences
In 2023, the Intergenerational Classroom brought together 25 older adult learners and 25 undergraduate students for its first iteration of the semester-long collaborative exploration in gerontology. At the end of the semester, with course evaluation and optimization in mind, we circulated surveys and hosted focus groups to learn more about course experiences.
Course outcomes included:
The creation of meaningful cross-generational friendships
Increased awareness of aging issues
Reduced ageist attitudes
A greater sense of community and civic engagement
Here is what our older learners and undergraduate participants reported:
Older Adult Learner Experiences
-
100% found the perspectives of the younger students to be helpful, valuable, and added to their overall learning experience in the class
-
100% felt that participation in the Intergenerational Classroom was beneficial for their cognitive health
“I like to think the students left the course with different ideas about what it looks like to be an older adult and that these ideas were positive.”
“I felt revitalized. It was the highlight of my week.”
Undergraduate Learner Experiences
-
100% felt that participation in the class has allowed them to reconsider some of the ageist attitudes they held about older adults
-
After the semester concluded, many continued to stay in touch with students they had met in the class, including older adult learners
“Through interactive class discussions and engaging lectures, I developed a much stronger understanding of the challenges faced by Canada’s rapidly aging population and the importance of preventative care.”
“This course sparked an interest in exploring careers related to geriatrics or aging and health.”

The 2025 Intergenerational Classroom is currently underway.
Please stay tuned for updates.
